The Emerald Isle is a country steeped in tradition, mystery and folklore. The incessant rain ensures beautiful shades of green all year round, and the legendary people are welcoming and cheerful.
Dublin is the heart and pulse of Ireland, a busy cosmopolitan city of fine Georgian buildings, tangible literary history and welcoming pubs. The main attractions include the fine Georgian buildings of the Customs House and the Four Courts, as well as Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells.
Politics, history and religion are inescapable parts of the fabric of Belfast. The major central landmark is Donegall Square, surrounded by imposing remnants of the Victorian era. The square is dominated by the City Hall, a true example of muck-and-brass architecture. Also on the square is the Linen Hall Library, which houses a major Irish literary collection.
Cork prides itself on its cultural pursuits with a heap of cosy pubs, the Cork Opera House, Crawford Art Gallery and Firkin Crane Centre. A popular day trip from Cork is to Blarney Castle, where every visitor is compelled to kiss the Blarney Stone to obtain the legendary 'gift of the gab'.
Waterford is a medieval-type city with narrow alleyways and a Norman tower - Reginald's Tower. Georgian times also left a legacy of fine buildings including the City Hall and the Bishop's Palace. The city's many churches are also noteworthy, in particular the interior of Holy Trinity Cathedral. Galway, with its narrow streets, old stone shop fronts and bustling pubs is also a delight.
The remoteness of Donegal and the wild and barren Connemara make the trip to the west coast worthwhile. County Kerry in Ireland's lush southwest corner is extremely popular, with stunning scenery and lots of traditional music. Dingle is a delightful little fishing town nearby, reached via the famous Ring of Kerry drive. The Burren region is an extraordinary place ringed by caves and little settlements including the popular Irish music centre of Doolin and the attractive coastal village of Ballyvaughan.
The main international airports are in Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Shannon (Limerick). Dublin and Shannon have regular trans-Atlantic flights and limited long-haul destinations. Each airport has bus and taxi services to the main centres.
