It’s not surprising that Aix-en-Provence has been an inspiration to writers, poets and painters alike. The town itself is a beautiful, vibrant and historical place, while the surrounding countryside is as attractive as anywhere in all of France.
The cours Mirabeau and rue Gaston de Saporta boast some of the best architecture, with remarkable buildings replete with sculpted doors and windows, and intricate ironwork balconies. The Cathedral of Saint Sauveur, north of the cours Mirabeau, is an ancient edifice showing a combination of Roman, early Christian, Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance styles.
The Tapestry Museum, located in the former palace of the archbishop, is home to some fabulous tapestries and furnishings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Museum of Fine Arts contains artwork from the 16th to 20th centuries. Other museums worth seeing are the Musee Granet and the Pavillion Vendome.
There is a great choice of cuisine in Aix. Place des Cardeurs is home to an abundance of restaurants, cafes and brasseries, while place Ramus boasts a selection of ethnic restaurants, with Indian, North African and Chinese cuisine on offer.
The nearby town of Avignon is the home of some fantastic architecture. The Petit Palais is the 13th century former living quarters of the archbishop, and is now an art museum. Alternatively, you can head out to Saint-Tropez for some great beaches and gorgeous weather.
To get to Aix-en-Provence by road from Avignon or other points north, follow the A7 south to the RN7, which will take you into town. From Marseilles in the south, take the A51 highway. Most international flights are received at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, and visitors can continue onward from there by road or rail. The closest airport to Aix-en-Provence is Marseille Airport, 25kms away.
