Alghero is situated on the picturesque, rustic island of Sardinia. Its impressive fortifications and Spanish architecture showcase its past, when it was a possession of Barcelona. This history, along with the nearby caves and beaches, make Alghero a charming town for visitors.

The surrounding medieval walls have ensured that the town remains small and compact, rendering itself favourably to exploration on foot. A good place to begin your tour is the main square, Piazza Sulis, which is watched over by the imposing Espero Reial tower.

Continuing your stroll along the seafront, you pass by more imposing towers dating from the Middle Ages; these are the towers of San Giacomo, Sant 'Elmo, Magdalena, Porta Terra and, finally, the tower of San Giovanni. If viewing all these towers leaves you worn-out, then stop at the charming church of Santa Maria and the peaceful church and cloister of San Francesco.

The old town is served by three main arteries: via Roma, via Carlo Alnerto and via Principe Umberto. These thoroughfares contain the bulk of Alghero’s bars, restaurants and shops. Wine connoisseurs should stop at the Sella and Mosca Wine Museum, which showcases the tipple’s production process and allows you to sample the finished product.

Just a short drive from Alghero is the fascinating Bronze Age graveyard of Anghelu Ruju. The site contains 38 small burial chambers carved into solid rock; due to their small size, they are referred to as ‘fairy tombs’. Only 24kms by car is the geographical wonder known as the Caves of Neptune. The subterranean complex contains a salt lake, towering stalactite columns, and intricate rock formations.

Another place worth visiting is the village of Palmavera on the road to Porto Conte. The ancient settlement dates from 1500 to 1000 BC and is has 50 circular huts surrounding a tower-like structure called a nuraghe.

If arriving by car, take the SS 131 from Cagliari to Sassari and then follow the signs for Alghero. The international airport at Fertilia, 10kms outside Alghero, is connected frequently to Italy's major cities and has a daily flight from London Stansted (three hours), among other services from Europe.
