Spectacular alpine scenery, lush green valleys, historic castles, religious architecture, and outstanding recreational opportunities explain the popularity of the French Alps and Savoy region as a tourist destination.
One of the most quaint and picturesque towns in the region is Annecy. Known as 'Little Venice' for its numerous canals, Annecy is located on the shores of Lake Geneva, actually a smaller lake than its large and more famous cousin of the same name to the north. The town is set below a backdrop of the towering snow-capped peaks of the Alps and is a convenient base from which to access the famed ski resorts of Chamonix, Megeve and Courchevel in the winter, as well as the slopes of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak, and other alpine peaks of the Alps in the summer. From Annecy you can also explore the nearby Doussard Nature Park, Lake Geneva and the foothills to the north of the town.
The town itself features historic architecture including the 15th century Church of St Maurice, the magnificent old Palais de l'Ile, and the Musee du Chateau, the former residence of the Genevois counts and now a first-rate museum with a variety of interesting exhibits. Annecy also abounds with comfortable accommodation and excellent restaurants.
Chambery, the capital of the Savoy region, is now very much a university town with a lively nightlife and an easygoing atmosphere. The impressive Castle of Dukes of Savoy is the centrepiece of the city and its chapel was once home to the famous but controversial Shroud of Turin. Nearby, on the shores of Lake Bourget, is the Roman spa town of Aix-les-Bains, popular with royalty and the rich for many years.
The region is world-renowned for its ski resorts. Runs of every level of ability are numerous, and many towns in the area are tailored to meet every need of tourists visiting to enjoy winter sports. In the warmer months, the area is bathed in warm sunshine, making it perfect for hiking and scenic drives.
Highlights in close proximity to the Alps and Savoy region include Lyon, France's second largest city, known for its impressive architecture; the ancient city of Vienne, on the mighty Rhone River; Grenoble, famous for science and learning as well as its 16th century Palais de Justice; the steep Vercors mountain range; and the natural Drome area where outdoor activities of all kinds can be enjoyed.
Direct international flights are served by Lyon and Geneva International Airports. Regular and varied transportation options are available to all destinations in the region.
