Amalfi is a picturesque town in southern Italy, near Naples. Beautifully situated on limestone cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, Amalfi was a powerful maritime republic in the 9th century but is now a small fishing port and tourist resort.
Near the waterfront is the Piazza del Duomo and the 9th century Cathedral of S Andreas. Extensively rebuilt last century, this fine cathedral, with its unique blend of Moorish and European styles, reflects Amalfi's original importance.
In Duomo Square you can also see the baroque fountain of S Andreas, built in 1760. From the piazza, alleys lead under white arches where curious little shops display ceramics with the appealing colours and designs of the region. There is a pleasant scenic walk to the Molini Valley (Valley of the Mills) where the paper mills that introduced paper to Italy were established in early times.
Nature lovers and hikers must not miss the pristine paths of the Amalfi coast. The road hugs the bends and curves of the cliffy coast, overlooking emerald blue waters and passing quaint villages nestled against the cliffs. The best way to really enjoy the Amalfi coast is touring by car. South from Sorrento, the road climbs toward the Colli di San Pietro then descends into Positano, once a sleepy little fishing village and a favourite hideaway of painters and writers.
The Emerald Grotto is nearby and is reached by rowing through exceptionally clear water, illuminated indirectly by rays of sunlight which give it a beautiful emerald colour.
There are daily flights with British Airways from Gatwick to Naples, the closest city. You can also fly with Alitalia to Milan or Rome and then take a domestic connecting flight. The hotels on the Amalfi Coast are about 90 minutes by car from Naples Airport. Rome is also possible as a gateway, with numerous daily flights and direct flights from Manchester and Edinburgh.
