Lanzarote is one of the quieter Canary Islands, known more for its natural attractions than its nightlife. Its striking volcanic landscape is coupled with golden beaches and a wonderful climate, making it a much sought-after holiday destination.

The island’s busiest town is Puerto de Carmen, with Playa Grande at its centre. Shops, restaurants and bars line this buzzing beachfront. Playa de los Pocillos and Playa de Matagorda are the other main beaches in the area, and all three are well-equipped with tourist amenities. Puerto de Carmen is also Lanzarote’s most vibrant area in terms of nightlife and is the best place to look for a party on this otherwise fairly quiet island.

La Cueva de los Verdes, in the north, is one of the island’s prime tourist attractions. This is one of the longest volcanic galleries in the world, and forms part of a series of underground grottoes created by the lava from Monte de la Corona’s eruption. Inside the caves ambient music is played, and there is an amazing lighting system which adds to the atmosphere. There is even an auditorium inside where you can watch a film that traces the natural history of Lanzarote’s strange landscape.

Lanzarote’s leisure options include scuba diving and snorkelling, which are especially interesting due to the abundant fish life and the strange volcanic rock formations underwater. Swimming, sunbathing, fishing and water sports are also popular.

Having your own transport on the island is a significant advantage, as it allows you to explore the many natural attractions as well as the various towns and villages scattered over Lanzarote’s expanse.

The unusual scenery of the La Geria area lies in the centre of the island and includes the villages of Yaiza, Tias, San Bartolome and Teguise. It is a protected zone and a visit here is a good way of discovering how rural life is lived on Lanzarote. El Golfo, on the southern coast, provides a rare example of volcanic activity that occurs near the coast, a phenomenon known as hydro-volcanism. Here you can see a vivid green crater lake, La Laguna de los Ciclos.

Lanzarote can be reached by ferry or by air. Lanzarote's airport is located between Arrecife (the capital) and Puerto del Carmen, and receives flights from most European cities. Weekly ferries leave for Lanzarote from Cadiz in mainland Spain, and there are also ferries that travel between the different Canary Islands.
