Austin is the capital of Texas and home to the gigantic University of Texas. This sparkling Texan city is a relaxing haven for musicians, hippies and other groups who enjoy the laid-back atmosphere here. In the 1990s, the city saw an influx of young high-tech professionals who added to its reputation of a ‘cool place to become a millionaire’.

Austin’s pace is mostly relaxed, the food and drink are good, and the live-oak-covered hills are a fine place for walking, jogging or bicycling. The University of Texas is a key source of the city's cultural savoir-faire. Its assets include a presidential library; theatre, dance, and concert venues; major literary archives and an important art collection.

A tour of the State Capitol of Texas is rewarding. The pink granite statehouse was built in 1888. Another interesting place to visit is the amazing Texas Governor’s Mansion, official residence for the First Family of Texas since 1856. The Austin Museum of Art displays a permanent collection of works, along with travelling exhibitions by international, national and local artists.

Learn more about the history of Texas at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Interactive exhibits, artefacts never publicly displayed before, an IMAX Theatre and the Texas Spirit Theatre make this museum more of an adventure. The old General Land Office Building, Texas’ oldest existing state building, is also worth a visit.

With thousands of acres of parks, preserves, and lakes set aside for public enjoyment, Austin is unusually nature-friendly. The city has preserved a vast municipal system of parks and reserves, and there is a lively hike-and-bike trail near downtown's Town Lake.

There are many stunning attractions in the area, including an array of national parks and small towns. Visit San Marcos to discover the town’s historic downtown and Texas’ largest outlet centre, which draws thousands of visitors daily. Just 40kms south of Austin, there are plenty of bargains at the 200 plus factory and outlet stores.

I-35 is the north-south approach to Austin; it intersects with Highway 290, a major east-west thoroughfare, and Highway 183, which also runs roughly north-south through town. Amtrak trains go from San Antonio to Austin regularly. You'll pass through San Antonio if you're travelling east or west to Austin via Greyhound bus; there are approximately 15 buses between the two cities each day. Austin’s airport is well served by many major airlines.
