The illustrious city of Avignon was the capital of Christendom in the 14th century and home to the popes. The city boasts some wonderful medieval buildings, along with great galleries, theatres and colourful parks. It is also uniquely a walled city, with much of the ramparts remaining.
The best of the sites include the Palais des Papes, a fortress/palace that towers over the town and once housed a group of cardinals who fled to Avignon in the 14th century. The rooms in the palace are extremely opulent – be sure to see the pope’s bedroom and the banquet hall. The Chapelle St-Jean, which dates back to the 14th century, has some beautiful frescoes
Not far from the Palais is the 12th century Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms, which contains the tombs of many popes. A walk around the promenade du Rocher-des-Doms and the beautiful gardens affords the visitor great views and a relaxing atmosphere.
In the warm months of July and August the city is home to the annual Festival d’Avignon. The festival attracts aficionados of music, theatre and art, who come from all corners of the world to see this cultural feast. Speaking of music, Avignon’s famous bridge, immortalised in the popular French folk song continues to stand in ruins, halfway across the Rhône river.
Located across the Rhône is Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon. Many of the cardinals once resided in this area, and the architecture is second to none. The quaint town also has some tasty food options. The nearby Eglise Notre-Dame is another site not to be missed. Avignon is also a good base from which to explore the charming countryside and villages of Provence, and the Cote d’Azur is also within easy reach.
The drive from Paris to Avignon is almost 700kms. Take the A6 south to Lyon, then A7 south all the way to Avignon. Avignon is 106kms northwest of Marseille and 80kms northwest of Aix-en-Provence. From Paris, the train is also an option, with TGV trains departing from the Gare de Lyon. Journey times are roughly three hours and the journey from Marseille takes 70 minutes. Aeroport Avignon-Caumont is located eight kilometres from the city and the one-hour flight from Paris Orly Airport is a very convenient way to travel to Avignon.
