Baltimore has a tradition of cultural diversity which makes it a fascinating city to visit. The combination of interesting tourist attractions, historical sites, and friendly people in such picturesque old neighbourhoods as Fells Point, Mount Vernon, Canton and Federal Hill makes Baltimore a popular tourist destination.
The Inner Harbor is the first place tourists are drawn to, as the area is filled with attractions which include: the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Harborplace, the USS Constellation and the Pier Six Concert Pavilion. The Power Plant houses several night-spots, and is a good place to go for after-dark entertainment.
The central business district is just above the Inner Harbor. It has some great restaurants as well as a large number of art galleries that line Charles Street, such as C Grimaldis Gallery, which offers a relaxing afternoon diversion.
Annapolis, Maryland's capital city, is a short drive from Baltimore. Here, you can explore the 18th century streets, watch boats in the harbour or visit the interesting State House. The town of Frederick, about 45 minutes west of Baltimore, is also worth visiting. It is home to one of Maryland’s best-preserved historic districts, featuring a fine selection of 18th and 19th century homes, churches and other buildings.
Interstate 95 connects Baltimore’s airport to the centre of the city; alternatively, you can drive downtown easily from the west on I-70. Penn Station, the city's railway station, is 1.6kms north of downtown. The Greyhound terminal is three blocks west of downtown with regular services from Washington, DC, New York City, Philadelphia and other major cities and towns. Baltimore-Washington International Airport is the aviation gateway to Maryland and Washington DC.
