Located in the northeastern region of the French-governed island of Corsica, Bastia has developed into the island’s major commercial centre. At the same time the town has retained its charm and many of its ancient buildings, and is a visual and historical feast in many aspects.
Bastia’s old town, Terra Vecchia, is a picturesque maze of winding streets, crumbling walls and exquisite Baroque churches, for which Bastia is renowned. To the north of Terra Vecchia and at the heart of the city is Place St-Nicolas, a tree-lined, airy square with views of the ocean and a variety of pleasant cafés.
Vieux Port is the most enticing part of town, with old houses overlooking the harbour and fishing boats throwing multi-coloured reflections on the water. By night, the harbour’s restaurants and waterside bars come alive with an eclectic mix of people and a vibrant atmosphere. Situated opposite of Vieux Port is Terra Nova, a historical district that has evolved into a fashionable locality for the young and trendy.
The pebble beaches directly below Bastia tend to get extremely crowded in summer, and it’s wise to head farther south along the eastern coast, where a sandy beach stretches along the shore. For Bastia’s best shopping, peruse the two streets running parallel to place St-Nicolas, boulevard Paoli and rue César Campinchi.
The island of Corsica is filled with interesting villages and beautiful natural areas. To the south of Bastia, La Marana is a 16-kilometre stretch of beach close to pretty, forested areas. Adjacent to La Marana is Mariana, with numerous historical sights. Ajaccio is the capital of the island, and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Bastia can be reached by bus from most towns on the island, and is linked by ferries to Nice and Genoa. The small Poretta Airport (regional) is 16kms south of the town.
