The city is divided into upper and lower towns, with the upper, or Citta Alta, containing the majority of the older sights. The top attractions are the Palazzo della Ragione with its portico, and the delightful church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dating from the Middle Ages. Just outside the city walls on via della Nuca is the Accademia Carrara. This 200-year-old art gallery is renowned for its Masters Collection, which includes works by Botticelli and Bellini.
If your preferred mode of transport is walking, then a stroll around the Cirra Alta is a rewarding experience. The area contains a well-maintained park and a Botanical Garden nestled amid the ancient architecture. The nearby settlement of San Vigilio is home to the scenic ruins of Castello and boasts spectacular mountain views.

By car from Milan, head east on A4 to the city. Bergamo is an hour away by train from Milan and trains leave the station every hour. Frequent services also arrive from Brescia. Buses run regularly between Bergamo, Milan and Como. Buses also run every half-hour from Orio al Serio Airport, which has frequent flights to and from other Italian and European cities.
