Located in the southwest of France, Bergerac is a charming town resting in the beautiful Dordogne River region. The town is a must for wine connoisseurs, with the area producing some of France’s most fabulous blends.

The town centre has been well-preserved and its quaint lanes are filled with 15th century edifices and half-timbered houses. Also in the heart of town is a large and impressive statue of Cyrano.

Bergerac’s museums are of an extremely high standard, providing fascinating information about the area and its past. Especially recommended is the Museum of Tobacco, which displays a unique collection of items related to tobacco smoking and the industry. Also worthwhile is the Wine and Shipping Museum, following Bergerac’s history of winemaking and river-trading.

True to the nature of France, there is no shortage of restaurants in Bergerac, and a wide selection of superb local wines is available to complement any meal. The area also has a lively nightlife, with numerous bars and cafés to choose from.

Bergerac is surrounded by quaint towns, beautiful scenery and a multitude of wine producers, with Bordeaux lying due east and Monbazillac to the south. Wine route maps are available from local tourist offices.

The Dordogne region has a number of sights and attractions to choose from, such as Lac de Gurson, a man-made lake complex surrounded by cafés, bars and restaurants. The lakes provide excellent fishing, and those seeking some peace and quiet can take advantage of the numerous nature trails that surround the complex. The village of Villefranche-de-Lonchat is a must for history buffs; it features two 14th century churches and a historical museum.

Bergerac can be reached by car via the A71 highway from Paris. At Vierzon, turn on to the A20 to Limoges, and then take the RN21 from Limoges to Bergerac. Regular buses and trains ply the route between Paris and Bergerac. Bergerac’s Roumanières Airport receives daily flights from London (2.5 hours), Southampton and Paris (1.5 hours).
