Britain's second largest city, Birmingham, is situated at the heart of England in the Midlands. Birmingham is famous for its shopping and the city boasts massive shopping malls, quaint boutiques and busy markets. Birmingham also has a vast expanse of canals.

The main sights in the city include the Town Hall, built in the 1830s, a Romanesque style structure with 40 Corinthian columns. Displaying some remarkable collections of art is the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The museum has exhibits on Birmingham’s industries, local history and archaeology.

The only way to explore the city centre is on foot. There are three notable churches in the centre. The 18th century neo-classical St. Philip's Cathedral has a high Baroque tower and magnificent stained glass windows. The oldest church is St. Martin's, dating from the 13th century. St. Chad's Cathedral was the first Roman Catholic church to be built in Britain after the Reformation.

Brindleyplace, at The Water's Edge in the canal area, is easily the best place to wine and dine. Here you’ll find a wide range of shops, cafés, restaurants and bars. Birmingham also offers a wide range of options for theatre, plays, concerts, opera and ballet, and live music is on offer in many of the pubs.

If you are driving, then head out to the fascinating National Sea Life Centre, Britain’s largest inland sea life centre. Here you’ll find the world’s first transparent underwater tunnel that allows visitors to be surrounded by sharks, stingrays and other marine life. The Black Country Museum in Dudley recreates the hard life of a mining village.

Birmingham has direct links to the major UK motorways: the M6, M5, M1 and M40 and is thus easily accessible from most major cities in Britain. Both rail and coach services are efficient and abundant, offering connections to all major cities in Britain. Birmingham International Airport is located close to the city, just off the M42 motorway to the southeast, and has abundant domestic and international connections. Access is easy, as the airport has its own rail station with services to Birmingham New Street Station.
