Bologna is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains and is renowned for its lively atmosphere. It also boasts an impressive collection of buildings, galleries, churches and museums as a result of its importance during the Renaissance period.
The city's most impressive medieval and Renaissance buildings are located in the old town around the area of the sweeping Piazza Maggiore and adjoining Piazza del Nettuno. The most central people-magnet here is the magnificent Fontana del Nettuno (fountain), sculpted in the mid 1500s.
Bologna is full of remnants of its fine Renaissance legacy, and highlights include: the grandiose and art-laden Palazzo Comunale (town hall), the Basilica di San Petronio - an enormous cathedral (c1392) and the Basilica di Santo Stefano, part of which dates from the 5th century.
The University Quarter, site of the world's oldest university, has become the entertainment precinct of the city, with many bars and restaurants along the Via Zamboni. Here you'll also find the Pinacoteca Nazionale (National Picture Gallery) and Oratorio di Santa Cecilia, with its remarkable frescoes.
Several 'leaning' towers are dotted about the city, the pick of which are the Torres degli Asinelli (Tower of the Asinelli), with a lookout deck, and the Torres degli Garisenda (Tower of the Garisenda).
Just out of the city is the elevated Basilica Santuario della Madonna di San Luca. This 18th century basilica is connected to the city walls by a lovely portico.
Visiting Bologna and admiring its Renaissance grandeur wouldn't be complete without a day trip to Florence or Venice. The art and culture in Florence is astounding, and the character of Venice is undeniable.
Guglielmo Marconi International Airport is just northwest of the city and receives flights from many European cities, but visitors from further a field usually arrive at Milan's Malpensa Airport and take the train (3 hours).
