Popular since the mid-19th century and characterised by grand Victorian architecture and spectacular steep ravines running down to the sea, Bournemouth is famous for its long sandy beach, pretty parks and gardens, and buzzing nightlife.

The main attraction is the 11kms of lovely sandy beach, and the café-lined promenade and pier that accompany it. The pier to the western end of the beach comes with a funfair and other attractions, and is ideal for the whole family. The Oceanarium is another popular attraction with its underwater tunnel and feeding demonstrations. For spectacular panoramic views of town and sea, take a ride on the tethered balloon in the central gardens.

A wander around the town will reveal some stunning examples of Victorian architecture, including the fascinating Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum (located in an atmospheric Victorian villa), housing Edwardian and Victorian art, plus an eclectic collection of artefacts from all over the world. Beautiful gardens are one of the highlights of this area, and one of the finest is Compton Acres, featuring Italian and Japanese gardens, idyllic woodlands, fountains and marble statuary.

Entertainment includes the Pavilion and Pier theatres, the impressive IMAX surround vision cinema and the Bournemouth International Centre, well known for its theatre and opera, and for hosting many year round exhibitions. By night, the town centre comes alive with a host of traditional pubs, modern bars and huge nightclubs.

There is a lot to see within an hour’s drive of Bournemouth. Ten minutes west is the picturesque town of Poole with its huge yacht-clad natural harbour and redeveloped quays; while northeast is the enchanting New Forest, ideal for the outdoor enthusiast. Just east of here are the fabulous maritime port-cities of Southampton and Portsmouth. Additionally, the Isle of Wight is a short ferry ride away. Salisbury, famous for its huge cathedral and the nearby Stonehenge, lies to the north.

From London by car, Bournemouth is accessible via the M3 and M27 motorways. Two trains an hour leave from London’s Waterloo Station, and National Express buses depart from Victoria Station in the capital, hourly. Bournemouth International Airport is north of the city but receives limited traffic; London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports are popular options. Nearby Poole receives regular ferries from Cherbourg in France.
