The architecturally and culturally important city of Brescia sits in the beautiful countryside of northern Lombardy and consequently attracts many tourists, drawn to its treasures and the nearby scenic delights.
The major attraction in the city is the medieval castle, which now houses two renowned museums: the Arms and Risorgimento. The Arms Museum contains an extensive collection of medieval and Renaissance weaponry, along with a remarkable display of medieval armour. The Risorgimento also contains weaponry, but displayed alongside it are memorabilia and paintings by Joli, Basiletti and Inganni.
The city’s centrepiece is Piazza del Foro, a good place from which to explore Brescia’s historical highlights. These include: the Roman Capitolium and Theatre; the St Salvatore Basilica; the Broletto; and the Rotonda. Culture lovers should seek out the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo Art Gallery, the Museum of the Christian Age, and the Roman Museum.
Brescia's restaurants, as is expected in Italy, are of top standard with regional and national specialities on the menu. Brescia also has a lively nightlife, with bars and cafés to suit all tastes.
This whole region is ideal for exploring by car and interesting excursions from Brescia are plentiful.
