Brittany Region - sky guide
for Brittany Region car hire
An incredibly varied and scenic coastline, beautiful beaches, historic museums and architecture, and traditional Breton culture explain Brittany's appeal as a holiday destination.
Finistere, or 'Land's End', is the westernmost area of the region and has a myriad of tiny coves, rocky inlets, and granite cliffs and outcrops. While the regional capital of Brest is a busy, lively city, the large town of Quimper is more atmospheric. Quimper is known for its unique faience earthenware pottery, which is tin-glazed and brightly colored. The town has a magnificent Gothic cathedral and boasts an exciting nightlife centred on quality cafes, bars and restaurants. South along the coast is the famed 17th century walled town-island of Ville Close, near the town of Concarneau, while northward is the fishing port of Douarnez, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Other highlights of Land's End include the Parish Closes, as well as Guimiliau and its surrounding area.
The resort town of Le Conquet is the beginning of a stretch of coastline broken regularly by river mouths and featuring magnificent beaches and coastal scenery. Take a ferry out to the peaceful island of Ouessant (Ushant) or, alternatively, head inland to explore the ruins of Tremazun Castle. North along the coast is Roscoff, a lively fishing and ferry port. It is known for its Chartes Perez Aquarium, which houses an extensive collection of Atlantic marine life. From Roscoff, follow the coast further north to the charming towns of Morlaix and Tregastel and the Rose Granite Coast.
The walled city of St Malo, in the Ille-et-Vilaine district, is an interesting stop and while in the vicinity visit the Foret de Paimport of Arthurian fame. Other famous attractions of Brittany include the Standing Stones of Carnac at Morbihan, the Armor and Emerald Coasts, Cap Frehal, and the spectacular Mont-St-Michel with its fascinating yet frightening tidal rush.
Gourmets will delight in the numerous varieties of excellent seafood served in Brittany's restaurants, particularly in Port Rhu, while the seaside resorts offer a variety of outdoor recreational activities for the whole family. Refreshing walks can be had along the Crozon Peninsula, while cruising can be arranged at the famous yacht harbour of Morat.
The closest international airport to Brittany is Paris' Charles de Gaulle International Airport. Connections can be made to Brest, where a variety of transportation options are available into the region.
