The bilingual capital city and crossroads of Europe, Brussels is a continually expanding centre for international relations, industry and trade. The city is noted for its tradition of strong international relations, magnificent halls and grand architecture. The charming Pis Mannekin, the sculpture of a young boy urinating, is one of the most famous landmarks here.

Dating from 1873, the elaborately decorated Bourse (Stock Exchange) is a well known example of the French Second Empire architectural style. There are many good museums in the city, including the Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles (Museum of the City of Brussels), which documents the history of the city, and the offbeat Musée des Brasseurs Belges (Belgian Brewers' Museum), which offers a permanent exhibition on modern hi-tech brewing methods.

The city of Brussels is divided into two areas known as the Lower and Upper Towns. The Lower Town offers a medieval town centre with sidewalk cafés, cellar restaurants and the magnificent Gothic Hôtel de Ville (Brussels Town Hall). Attractions include Ste Catherinen, Ilôt Sacré and Marolles. Meanwhile, the Upper Town is home to wide boulevards, major museums and upmarket shopping areas.

It's enjoyable to pop into one of the many bars in Brussels for a 'pintje' (a glass of beer). Au Bon Vieux Temps, rue du Marché-aux-Herbes 12, is nestled at the end of a narrow alleyway, and has a mysterious old-world atmosphere. Alternatively, try the trendy art nouveau styled De Ultieme Hallucinatie, rue Royale 316, where visitors sit in tiny booths on 1930s railroad station benches designed by Henry Van de Velde.

Located on the outskirts of Brussels is the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, home to the country's premier collection of fine art. Nine kilometres southwest of Brussels is Beersel, home to the only local example of a still intact fortified medieval castle. The 13th century castle is encased by a moat complete with drawbridge. For some good winter skiing, head to the Ardennes in southeastern Belgium.

The Brussels motorway (the Petit Ring) surrounds the city centre. If driving here from Paris, take the E-19; or from Oostende, take the E-40. From Calais, take the A-25 to Lille, the A-16 to St-Ghislain, and then the E-19 to Brussels. By rail from the UK, take the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel from London, and Thalys connecting with Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne with Brussels. By bus, Eurolines has service three times daily from London's Victoria coach station. Zaventem Airport is 14kms northeast of Brussels.
