Hungary's showcase city was once one of Europe's most impressive cities, and the grandeur of its Austro-Hungarian empire heyday, together with a thousand years of proud Magyar history have survived the recent 'Soviet' era.

The walled castle district in Buda, located on a ridge south of the Danube, is the most historic area of Budapest. It includes the medieval Old Town, Royal Palace, Budapest Historical Museum, Hungarian National Gallery and Library and 700-year-old Gothic St Matthias Church. From the turreted Fishermen's Bastion you can enjoy excellent views of the Danube and Pest, on the northern side.

Cross the Danube on the famous Chain Bridge; it's the best place to view the riverside Gothic Parliament buildings. Easy to explore on foot, Pest is full of neo-classical architecture, including the Opera House, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Post Office Savings Bank, Museum of Applied Arts and St Stephen's Basilica. Many of its streets are pedestrianised and the Parisian-like Andrássy Boulevard leads to magnificent Heroes' Square, with its grand statues.

Of the several good museums in the city, the National Museum, located in a stately 18th century building, gives a fascinating insight into Magyar history.
Budapest is also known for its hot spring baths, some dating back to the time of the Romans. The most famous baths are at the Hotel Gellert in Buda.

The pedestrianised thoroughfares in Pest are lined with pavement cafes and restaurants offering traditional Hungarian cuisine and international specialities.

Óbuda is a curious suburb, offering a glimpse of Budapest a century ago, with its winding cobbled streets. Nearby are the remains of the Roman civilian town of Aquincum, the most complete in Hungary. A more recent legacy is all the Soviet-era statues that have been banished to a curious park out of town.

There are several delightful towns set among the hilly banks of the Danube that are worth making a day trip to, among them the 14th century town of Szentendre with its many museums, including an open-air folk museum, and Visegrad with extensive excavations of a Renaissance palace.

Ferihegy International Airport is Budapest's only airport, and boasts a brand new terminal servicing more than 30 international airlines. Flights to European cities are numerous and there are several trans-Atlantic options. Some visitors prefer the romance of a boat ride down the Danube from Vienna.
