Cagliari is the political and cultural centre of the beautiful island of Sardinia, which lies perched in the Mediterranean, west of mainland Italy. This scenic and historical island enthrals the visitors who take the time to explore it.
Cagliari’s main historical attractions are scattered in the medieval walled town called Castello. Places to see here include the renowned National Archaeological Museum, housed in a former armoury, which sits alongside three other impressive museums. The Castello district also contains a towering cathedral, the medieval City Hall and the Belgrano Palace, which now houses the city’s museum.
Walking enthusiasts should take time to stroll around the Castello. The places to enter the walled area are at San Pancrazio or Porto dei Leoni – from here, the narrow Spanish influenced streets delve deep into the interior. The main thoroughfare is via Lamarmora, which winds its way past the cathedral and the pretty churches of Santa Croce and San Giuseppe, before finishing in the museum complex.
For Sardinian gifts, try shopping at the small boutiques and workshops located in the Castello; they are renowned for their ceramics and leather products. The Castello is also the best place to eat fresh seafood and game from Sardinia’s mountains and to sample the live country music in the many small bars.
A short journey from Cagliari is the Roman city of Nora, whose impressive ruins contain a bath house, amphitheatre and well-preserved houses. A little farther by car are the expansive beaches at Chia, with their imposing sand dunes.
Elmas Airport, 10 minutes from the city, is served by several airlines offering daily flights from the mainland and across Europe. Cagliari is also linked by ferries from Civitavecchia, and by less frequent services from Naples, Palermo and Trapani.
