Cairns, in northern Queensland, is surrounded by gorgeous wilderness, from beaches and reefs, to mountains and stunning rainforest. Scuba divers head here in droves to experience the Great Barrier Reef. This is the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest - lie side by side.
Cairns’ natural attractions are the most rewarding aspect of the area. The Flecker Botanic Gardens offers excellent fernery, an orchid house and an exhibition about usage of plants by Aborigines for bush food and medicine. Across the road from the Botanic Gardens is the Centenary Lakes Boardwalk, from where you can observe typical rainforest species, including giant paperbark trees and pandanus.
A visit to the rainforest is equally rewarding. You can take a train that runs on a century-old track or ride the Skyrail gondola through the mountains to Kuranda, a rain-forest village with a butterfly farm and a wonderful crafts market. The ride takes you past Barron Falls and through the lush foliage of the Atherton Tableland and Daintree rain forest. While in Kuranda, don't miss the Tjapukai Dancers, a world-famous Aboriginal dance troupe that performs a one-hour show of legends, music and dance.
If you’re looking to relax after all your exciting adventures, there are innovative restaurants and plenty of stores, from duty-free boutiques to fine-art galleries. Additionally, Cairns’ nightlife goes on until the sun comes up.
Port Douglas, about 70kms up the coast, has stunning beaches and upscale resorts. You can snorkel or take glass-bottomed boat trips almost anywhere along the coast. North of Cairns is the Captain Cook Highway, which is one of the most scenic coastal drives in Queensland. This road runs right along the coastline for about 30kms past a string of lovely coves and fine beaches. On the way, you’ll pass Machans Beach, a quiet residential community with a couple of beachfront cafés.
For those entering the region by car, it is recommended to travel in the dry season, from June to September, as roads may be impassable in the wet season. Cairns International Airport is a short ride from the city centre and serves flights from most major Pacific rim cities as well as domestic flights.
