An attractive and dynamic city, Calgary is situated close to Alberta's majestic Rocky Mountains on the banks of the Bow River. Despite the town’s imposing skyline, dominated by dozens of business towers, it retains the charm and atmosphere of a much smaller, friendlier town.
The best way to get yourself oriented when you first arrive in Calgary is to find your way to the top of the 190-metre Calgary Tower, where you can see the entire city laid out beneath you. Once you have your bearings, exploring the city on foot is simple, as there are paved walking and cycling paths linking the downtown area to the major residential areas and parks.
It is possible to go from one end of the city to the other without ever leaving the charming bicycle paths. If you feel like taking a lazy stroll along the riverfront, Princes Island Park, along the Bow River, provides a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the lively downtown area.
The Calgary Stampede, undoubtedly Calgary's biggest visitor attraction, features a large parade and world class rodeo, and draws more than a million people each year. Other attractions, including the Glenbow Museum and Canada Olympic Park, are great places to visit year round.
Opportunities abound to check out more of the surrounding area by car. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a 90-minute drive south of Calgary along Highway 2. The bizarrely-titled attraction is named for the story of a 19th century Blackfoot Indian who met his end by watching the jump from the base of the cliff, directly under the falling animals.
By road from the US border in the south, Highway 2 runs to Calgary. The same road continues north to Edmonton (via Red Deer). From Vancouver in the west to Regina in the east, take the Trans-Canada Highway. Canada’s national rail service provider is VIA Rail, however, the nearest station to Calgary lies 299kms to the north, in Edmonton.
Calgary International Airport is located 17kms northeast of the city centre and is the transport hub for southern Alberta. A variety of shuttle services are available, and taxis at metered rates take about 20 minutes to reach downtown.
