Calvi is a pretty port town located to the northwest of the French island of Corsica, and often likened to the French Riviera. Its beautiful beaches and ancient citadel make it a fun and fascinating tourist destination.

The trademark feature of Calvi is the Genoese Citadel, situated high on a bald rock known as a ‘calvus’, from which the city’s name was derived. The fortified village is entered by way of place Christopher Colomb. Inside the citadel, one of the major attractions is the house of Laurent Giubega, the godfather of Napoleon. Giubega offered the future emperor refuge in his home when he was fleeing other Corsicans.

At the highest point of the rock is another highlight, the Cathedrale Saint-Jean Baptiste, a church that was originally constructed in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1570 after it was damaged by an explosion. Other attractions are the Governor’s Palace and the Renaissance Oratory of St-Antoine. The citadel also offers magnificent views of the harbour and the gulf of Calvi.

A good place to relax, La Marine is a palm-lined waterfront area with many restaurants and cafés. Also enjoyable is rue Clemenceau, a winding central street with numerous boutiques and stores. Calvi’s southern side is blessed with a long stretch of sandy beach offering water sports, swimming and beautiful views back towards the town and citadel.

Corsica offers many attractions, and it’s a good idea to take some time to explore more of the island. Close to Calvi is the fortified town of Corte, which has a vibrant atmosphere and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains with plenty of hiking trails. In the far south of the island is the Citadelle of BonaFacio, which holds a precarious position on top of white limestone cliffs.

Corsica island can be reached by means of sea or air. There are several ferries which travel between destinations in Europe and ports on the island. Corsica is served by four main airports, all of which have connections to most European airports. Calvi Catherine Airport is situated approximately five kilometres from the town centre.
