Typified by wide-open greens beside the idle river Cam and marvellous Gothic buildings, Cambridge is a well-known student town with a lovely atmosphere and plenty of history.
The town is best known for its colleges - collectively known as Cambridge University. King's College Chapel is perhaps the most impressive college building, but there are several other stately courtyards and college grounds open to the public. Some 30 colleges make up the university with the oldest, Peterhouse, dating back to 1284. Other famous colleges include: Christ's College, Corpus Christi, Girton, Jesus and Magdalene. Between them they boast alumni that include Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Byron, Charles Darwin and Oliver Cromwell.
Nowadays the modest river Cam is best known for punting. An enormous green site is adjacent to the river as it passes through the town centre, while the 'backs' are grassy knolls that follow the river past some of its most historic college buildings.
Other attractions include: the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Corn Exchange, University Botanical Gardens, and several museums and galleries. With so many students in residence, the town boasts a lively atmosphere. There are numerous pubs and cheap restaurants, and the unhurried streets are more populated with bicycles than cars, making the town a good place to explore on foot.
Several pretty and historic towns such as Ely, Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds are found in Cambridgeshire and in the East Anglia region.
Most visitors reach Cambridge by rail or car, as the nearest international airports are located in London. Trains run from London Liverpool Street Station to Cambridge once an hour. There are also good bus options and driving is also relatively easy.
