for Cannes car hire
Known throughout the world for its glitz and glamour, Cannes is very much the up market place to be seen on the Cote d'Azur. Film stars and directors mingle among the million dollar yachts and pricey boutiques, while humble onlookers simply come to gawk.
Every May the city hosts the annual Cannes Film Festival, which includes almost 1000 screenings at the famous Palais, attracting thousands from the movie industry.
The old town of Le Suquet is perched on a hill from where you can see beautiful panoramic views. The remains of the fortified 12th century priory Chapelle Ste-Anne are found here. The Musée de la Castre occupies the former Castle of Cannes, which was built to protect the harbour and adjoining coast. Cannes' main streets - rue d'Antibes, rue Meynardier and the promenade de la Croisette are good places to spot the rich and famous!
The palm fringed waterfront avenue, La Croisette, gives Cannes its exotic, high-class appeal. Wander around the harbour with its luxury yachts but don't expect to find non-paying beaches in this area. A popular escape is the Îles de Lérins, a short boat ride offshore, with good walking and cycling trails and several small, quieter beaches. The Forville covered market, two blocks behind the Mairie, has cheap fresh food, in typical French style.
To explore the entire southern coastline and the inland Provence region it is worth hiring a car. Antibes is the nearest holiday town, with superb beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and a large marina. Nice, with its winding streets and squares full of Genoese, Provençal, medieval and Baroque architecture, is a tourist hub. Monaco, with its Casino Royale, holds the reputation for attracting high society, and the inland areas of Provence make a delightful excursion with their sweeping vineyards, sleepy villages and historic towns.
The nearest international airport to Cannes is seven kilometres west of Nice, and the journey takes about 45 minutes by car. There are regular flights to Nice from many European cities and limited trans-Atlantic flights. International flights also arrive in Marseille. Connections to Paris and other French cities are numerous.
