The iconic Table Mountain is the city's most distinctive attraction, and you can hike up or take a cable car to the summit. Lion's Head is another climbable peak, while the world-class Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at the foot of mountain provides a more sedate activity.
300 years of history can be found in the city environs, including a mixture of Edwardian, Victorian and Cape Dutch architecture centred on the colourful, cobblestoned Green Market Square. The Good Hope Castle, near the lovely neo-classic city hall, is perhaps the most historic of the city's attractions. To truly appreciate the cultural diversity and curious history of this city, however, visit the District Six and Bo Kaap museums.
Long Street, lined with bars and restaurants, is popular at night, but most tourists throng to the busy Victorian and Albert Waterfront, which is packed with restaurants, bars, hotels and a shopping mall. From here you can catch ferries to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.
If you prefer the beach, Camp's Bay is the trendiest option, but good beaches are also found at Blouberg and Muizenburg. Other quaint seaside towns worth visiting are Hout Bay and Llandudno, both less than 40 minutes from the city.
The hinterland also offers some fantastic day trips and the cliff-hugging Chapman's Peak drive out to the Cape Point Reserve is one of the world's most spectacular scenic routes. Inland, the historic town of Stellenbosch is the centre of the wine industry, and a little further away is the curious former Huguenot settlement in the lovely Franschoek valley.
Cape Town's international airport is manageable and well maintained, with plenty of shuttle options into the city (20 minutes). It receives a few long haul flights, but most visitors arrive via a Johannesburg connection.
