Less than hour from Toulouse is the historical city of Carcassonne. A world heritage site, this city is the only fortified town in Europe that is still inhabited. With its castles, cathedral and beautiful canal it is a well preserved, extraordinary landmark.
Montsegur fortresse, situated on a 1,200m outcrop, affords the visitor a panoramic view of the area. Arques, with its square tower and four turrets, is a blinding masterpiece of the 13th century. Villerouge-Termenes fortress is located in the middle of the village.
Built in the 12th century, Chateau Comtal, on top of a hill, was once home to the ruling classes of the time. One of the oldest organs in France can be found in The Basilique St-Nazaire, which dates back to the 16th century.
The wonderful Canal du Midi is a great place for a leisurely stroll. Built to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea, it consists of 99 locks surrounded by beautiful flora. There’s no better to have a charming picnic and talk about the day’s experiences.
The town of Beziers, where the first massacre of Cathars took place in 1209, is only a short drive from Carcassonne. The town now is known for its quality wine, bull fights and Friday flower market.
France has an excellent road network, and Carcassonne can be easily reached via motorway A61 from northern France. A number of French ports, including Calais and the Eurotunnel, have a regular train service to Carcassonne. Carcassonne is served by both Carcassonne Airport and Toulouse International Airport. Toulouse is now only a two hour flight from London, and there is at least one direct flight from Heathrow to Toulouse per day.
