With the serene Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, the rolling hills of central Virginia reveal a scenic pastoral landscape around the charming historic town of Charlottesville. This is where Thomas Jefferson built his famous mountaintop home, Monticello, where he later died. Along with James Madison, who lived in Montpelier (40kms north of Charlottesville), Jefferson was a key player in the emerging United States two centuries ago.
Charlottesville was established in 1762 as the county seat for Albemarle. Today, Charlottesville is a growing cosmopolitan centre, and is increasingly becoming a popular residence of the rich and famous. However, the prime attractions are still centred on Thomas Jefferson and his magnificent creations.
The most important attractions in Charlottesville include: Monticello, the grounds of the University of Virginia, Ash Lawn-Highland, Historic Court Square and Michie Tavern (dating from 1784). Each place has played a unique role in the history of the US and tours, special events, and educational programs at these attractions are a good way to learn more about the area.
Thomas Jefferson’s creative architectural style can be experienced on the lovely grounds of the University of Virginia, which he founded. The official tours of the university take you to the university's West Range, where Woodrow Wilson and Edgar Allan Poe both lived when they were students.
Many visitors come to Charlottesville to see Monticello, one of the greatest architectural treasures in the US. Monticello is located just five kilometres southeast of Charlottesville. Designed by its owner, Thomas Jefferson, the building is a fine example of neoclassical design, and it is filled with ingenious little inventions, such as a seven-day calendar clock, semiautomatic glass doors and a built-in bed that Jefferson could enter from his bedroom, on one side, or his study, on the other.
Just a few minutes past Monticello is another presidential estate, Ash Lawn-Highland. This vast plantation was the home of President James Monroe, a good friend of Jefferson.
Charlottesville is on I-64 from the east or west and US 29 from the north or south. I-64 connects with I-81 at Staunton and with I-95 at Richmond. US Airways, Delta and United fly commuter planes to Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, north of town off US 29.
