The small city of Charlottetown, on Prince Edward Island, is not to be missed as it is essentially the birthplace of Canada. It was here that the founders of the country gathered in 1864 to unite all of British North America into one country. The city’s rich history lingers in the beautiful historic buildings and waterfront.

If you’d like to know more about how Canada came into being, step back in time and experience Canadian history through multimedia at Founders’ Hall. This attraction uses modern media to tell the tales of the people and politics that shaped Canada. The Time Travel Tunnel will take you back to 1864 and lead you through the pages of Canadian history until present day.

Alternatively, pay a visit to the Province House National Historic Site and wander through the halls where the Fathers of Confederation once worked to unite Canada. This national icon is open for viewing year round.

The Fathers of Confederation are commemorated again at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, which boasts a wonderful theatre, with musicals, comedy and maritime music that takes place from May to October every year and also showcases the work of some of the country’s finest artists.

Explore the beauty and quaint atmosphere of Charlottetown’s charming waterfront. The boardwalk connects Founders’ Hall with Confederation Landing and is full of cafés, unique shops and boutiques, as well as historic houses - particularly at Peake’s Wharf.

Charlottetown is renowned for its lively festivals, particularly throughout the summer months. The Atlantic Superstore Festival of Lights takes place from June 28 to July 1 and commemorates Canada’s birthday with three nights of outdoor concerts on the waterfront, hundreds of buskers entertaining the masses, as well as rides that people of all ages will enjoy.

Prince Edward Island is roughly 1,600kms from Toronto; 1,000kms from Montreal; 1,100kms from Boston; and 1,450kms from New York City. An enjoyable way to enter the island is via the Confederation Bridge, a 13-kilometre engineering marvel that connects PEI to Jourimain Island, New Brunswick.

VIA Rail and Amtrak rail operators offer services from Montreal to Moncton, New Brunswick, with connecting bus service to Charlottetown. Travel to Charlottetown by air is possible from the Canadian cities of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec and Toronto.
