Known as the 'windy city', Chicago is situated on the southern tip of Lake Michigan and is famous for its premier art galleries, museums and its proximity to historically important sites. These assets, combined with the comfort and convenience of a modern metropolis, explain Chicago's appeal as a tourist destination.
Many of Chicago's principal attractions are located in the historic centre of the city surrounded by the elevated train tracks called the Loop. The Art Institute, on the eastern side of the Loop, is famous throughout the world for its spectacular collections of art. A few blocks north is the Chicago Cultural Center, which features galleries, exhibitions, beautiful interior design and a permanent museum.
For families and natural history lovers, the Shedd Museum houses one of the largest varieties of aquatic animals in the world, while the free Lincoln Park Zoo, founded in 1868, is known for its huge monitor lizards and Galapagos turtles.
Famous Michigan Avenue, also called the 'Magnificent Mile', runs from the Chicago River to Lincoln Park. It is lined with a multitude of interesting boutiques and shopping plazas.
In close proximity to the city are several sites of interest. Lincoln Home is the one-time home of Abraham Lincoln, who lived there until 1861 when he was elected president. Completed in 1848, the Illinois and Michigan Canal connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi watershed. The Canal runs through a picturesque rural and wooded landscape. The start of the well-known 3,700 mile long Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is located near Wood River. The Trail commemorates the arduous expedition of the Corps of Discovery, who left Wood River in 1804 and reached the Pacific Ocean in 1805.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is one of the world's busiest. Flights to and from over 300 international cities, as well as all main United States destinations are available seven days a week, making Chicago extremely convenient for travel.
