Often referred to as the most English city outside of England, Christchurch, on New Zealand’s South Island, retains a distinctly English flavour, from the River Avon to its cathedral square and manicured gardens.

The city has more to offer than just a pastiche of colonial traditions, and Christchurch is a lively and well-kept city boasting much for visitors to see and do. Dominating the city is the large Gothic Cathedral, situated on Cathedral Square. This central area is frequented by buskers and street entertainers, and is also lined with tourist shops. Also worth seeing are the Arts Centre with its studios and contemporary galleries, and the renowned Antarctic Centre.

A pleasant walk follows the meanderings of the Avon River as it flows leisurely through town. Its banks are lined with numerous cafés and bars, and the walk culminates at the beautiful Botanical Gardens, where you can hire a boat at the Antigua Boatsheds.

There are many good excursions from Christchurch. A recommended trip is to Akaroa, a former French settlement which huddles against the hillsides of the Banks Peninsula. Its picturesque setting and lovely cafés make it a popular spot. For a taste of Maori life, go to Nga Hau e Wha Marae, a short drive from the city.

If you're coming from the north, you'll drive in on State Highway 1 (SH1) and enter Christchurch through the northwest suburbs of Papanui and Merivale. From Dunedin, via Timaru and Ashburton, you'll also be on State Highway 1. If you're coming from the west coast, you'll go over Arthur's Pass and enter Christchurch at Upper Riccarton, a trip taking four hours.

A rail service runs to Picton ferry port, and the Trans-Alpine route is popular with tourists. InterCity bus service covers most of the South Island. Christchurch International Airport (10kms from the city) is the South Island’s main gateway, with regular daily flights from Australia, and frequent connections within the country. Direct long haul flights from other countries mostly head to Auckland.
