Clearwater - sky guide
for Clearwater car hire
Clearwater is a progressive city offering everything you could expect from a tropical Florida paradise, and much more. Named literally ‘Clear Water’, translated from the Native American Indian word ‘Pocotopaug’, the area boasts abundant fresh springs along the shore.
The downtown area is the gateway to the beautiful Clearwater beaches, which are the most popular feature of the area. There are 45kms of slim barrier islands that skirt the gulf shore of the Pinellas Peninsula. At the southern end of the strip, St Pete Beach is heavily developed and often overcrowded during the winter season. Pass-a-Grille, on the island's southern end, is a quiet residential enclave with eclectic shops and a decent but crowded public beach.
Sunsets are best viewed at the famous Pier 60, a ‘street festival’ located on the promenade portion of Clearwater Beach's famous fishing pier, celebrating the setting of the sun. Here you can enjoy artists, craftsmen and performers along with weekend musical entertainment.
For family entertainment, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a unique attraction where you can view, touch and experience the biology and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles, Kemp's Ridley sea turtles, river otters, sting rays, local fish, coral reefs, mangroves and more.
Moccasin Lake Nature Park is a good place to learn about the plant and animal species native to the area. This preserve is a sanctuary for rescued and rehabilitated birds, and also has reptilian, insect and fish displays, plant and energy exhibits, and nature trails.
One of Florida's most fascinating small towns is just 20kms north of Clearwater; Tarpon Springs is known as ‘the Sponge Capital of the World’. Greek immigrants from the Dodecanese Islands settled here in the late 19th century to harvest sponges, which grew in abundance offshore. Enjoy authentic Aegean cuisine or take in a fishing cruise. The Spongeorama is a museum dedicated to sponges and sponge divers. Also interesting to watch is a scuba diver feeding sharks three times a day in the Konger Tarpon Springs Aquarium.
From Tampa (which can be reached via I-75 or I-4), keep driving west and you'll come to St Petersburg Beach and Clearwater Beach. Two major airports are conveniently nearby: Tampa International Airport and St Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport.
