Cologne is a cosmopolitan city located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, along the Rhine River, between Dusseldorf and Bonn. It has abundant attractions, ranging from its culinary excellence and humming night-time entertainment scene, to gorgeous cathedrals and superb museums. Cologne’s annual carnival draws travellers in droves from all over the globe.

Visitors to Cologne have the pick of many fascinating and informative museums. The Römisch-Germanisches Museum traces the history of the Roman occupation of the Rhine area. Alternatively, Ludwig Museum exhibits a diverse range of significant 20th century art.

Another notable attraction is the Museum Complex, situated between the Rhine River and the city’s sightseeing highlight, the Dom. This 13th century Gothic cathedral features stunningly beautiful stained-glass windows, twin spires soaring up towards the sky, and an awe-inspiring support structure of 56 pillars. The Museum Complex houses 14th century Dutch and German artwork in an airy sky-lit environment.

One of Cologne’s outstanding attributes is its supreme gastronomy, best accompanied by the unique Kölsch beer produced by numerous breweries in the city. Nightlife is concentrated in distinct areas, and the most relaxed of these is Belgisches Viertel, to the west of the city centre. In the Altstadt, the area around Gross St Martin is popular with the business set and tourists; while the St Severins quarter is home to the most upmarket bars and cafés.

Around and about Cologne are numerous additional attractions. The Poller Wiesen, scenic parks situated slightly farther up river, are where local people often hold celebrations and festivities. A short drive east of the city will take you to the Königsforst, the largest forest in the area. Bonn and Frankfurt are farther afield, but still within easy driving accessibility and perfect for travellers craving some additional city life.

Ten highways lead to Cologne and seven bridges hurdle the Rhine (Cologne sits on both sides of the river). From major German cities, it is connected north and south by the A3 autobahn and east and west by the A4 autobahn.

Trains and buses travel between Cologne and a large number of regional, national and other European destinations. Koln-Bonn Airport is situated halfway between Cologne and Bonn, and has connecting flights to many transatlantic and European cities, as well as ongoing flights to regional destinations.
