Colorado is a breathtaking mountainous state. Here you’ll find artefacts from 10,000 years ago, mysterious cave dwellings from 1000 AD, Old West saloons, turn of the century houses and steam-trains, and modern metropolitan cities. Gorgeous scenery and a plethora of winter adventure sports add to the state’s appeal.
Denver is known as Colorado's 'Mile High City', and can either be a destination in itself or a starting point for travels throughout the state. With its magnificent location, Denver is the perfect combination of a big city and the backwoods.
Larimer Square on the southwestern edge of the downtown area is home to stylish shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and other gathering spots. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is one of the most important natural history museums in the country, and houses an IMAX theatre and the Gates Planetarium. In the hills just west of Denver, Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, built into the 70-million-year-old rock formations during the Great Depression, is a sight worth seeing.
Colorado Springs is nestled among the towering and majestic Rocky Mountains, and offers stunning vistas of rugged beauty at every turn. The Garden of the Gods is one of the most intriguing natural attractions here. Made up of large red sandstone formations, overhangs and jagged pinnacles along with beautiful wooded areas, this is a good place for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum has artefacts from the area's past. The Museum of the American Numismatic Association has one of the world's largest collections of coins, paper money and military medals; while the May Natural History Museum displays over 7,000 giant and exotic insects from around the world.
Skiing is a dominant winter pastime. Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs are snowy playgrounds for the wealthy. Also of interest, Old Town Burlington is a living-history museum with buildings from the 1880s. The mountain towns of Creede, Lake City and Leadville also have extensive historic districts, stone jails, and false-fronted buildings that will transport you back 100 years.
Denver is situated at the intersection of interstates I-70 and I-25. Amtrak's California Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco via Denver. Denver International Airport is located 38kms northeast of downtown and is one of the nation’s busiest airports.
