Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital city, is located on the Øresund, at the entrance to the Baltic Sea. The city is one of Scandinavia’s most important destinations in terms of global significance, and it has many well-preserved historical buildings and a charming, old-world atmosphere.

A good place to start a walking tour of the city is in the main square, the Rådhuspladsen, which lies between the historical section of the city and its modern counterpart. The Kongens Nytorv is another lively square, and is the perfect place for people-watching and absorbing the city’s vibrant daily life.

Leading out of the Kongens Nytorv is Strøget, Copenhagen’s main shopping street, located in the city’s Latin quarter. It is reserved exclusively for pedestrians, and features numerous notable old buildings. Highlights here include: the Rundetårn, an observatory that was built in the 17th century, and the Vor Frue Kirke, which was originally built in 1191 and rebuilt for the last time in 1829.

The Latin quarter is also a fabulous place to stop for a snack for a drink in one of the many cafés. An excellent entertainment option is Tivoli Gardens, a world famous, century-old amusement park, with rides, restaurants and other attractions.

Situated a short way out of the city centre is Christianshavn, an interesting district that originated in the 17th century and contains a number of worthwhile sights. These include the Vor Frelsers Kirke and the Royal Danish Naval Museum, the Orlogmuseet. However, most visitors are drawn to the area by Christania, a hippy settlement that was established 30 years ago; the community here continues to live out a simple, alternative existence.

Nature lovers should make their way to the island of Møn, located south of Zeeland and featuring beautiful forests and some good beaches. There are some spectacular chalk cliffs at Møns Klint, and the nearby Viking ring fortresses of Trelleborg are also worth seeing.

If you’re driving to Copenhagen from Europe or catching the train, you are most likely to make use of the Øresundsfordindelsen Tunnel, which was completed in 2000. From Gedser (southern Denmark), take E55 north to Copenhagen. If you're coming from Sweden and crossing at Helsingborg, you'll land on the Danish side of Helsingør. From there, take express highway E55 south.

Buses run frequently from the central station non-stop to destinations throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Copenhagen’s international airport is situated nine kilometres from the city centre.
