Corfu - sky guide
for Corfu car hire
Situated off Greece's west coast, Corfu is the most popular of the Ionian Islands. A mixture of rampant tourist development, ancient history and natural beauty, together with its proximity to Italy (easily accessible by ferry), makes this island extremely popular with Europeans.
Corfu Town is the island's centre - an odd mix of modern high-rise holiday apartments and ancient structures. The town's focal points are the cafe-filled arcades, known as the Liston, and the Venetian old town, with its Byzantine architecture.
The east coast is the most heavily developed and liveliest area. Nisaki and Agni, further north, are quieter and full of lovely sea-front tavernas, while the Venetian harbour of Kouloura is picturesque.
If you've come to Corfu for more than just sunshine, sea and sand, Kassiopi is a charming coastal village with traces of its Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian past. South of Corfu Town is the Kanoni Peninsula, which is liberally sprinkled with ancient ruins.
The less developed and more beautiful west coast has some of the best beaches. The large resort of Paleokastritsa remains unspoilt, with its verdant mountainous backdrop and excellent snorkeling. Agios Georgios is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, and nearby Afionas has Neolithic ruins. Pelekas is a good beach on which to watch sunsets, while naturists should head for Myrtiotissa before taking their clobber off! Inland, Mt Pantokrator is the island's highest peak and good for hiking.
Across the island there are entertainment options to suit all tastes, whether you prefer a thumping disco, good restaurant, quiet beach or interesting museum. Corfu retains its natural beauty and is covered with olive groves, fields of wildflowers and herb scented mountains. Greece is also well known for its traditional food and wine.
An international airport receives plenty of charter and scheduled flights in the season. There are also frequent car ferries from Brindisi, Venice and Trieste in Italy, and Patras on the Greek mainland.
