Corsica is a beautiful, wild island with a rugged coastline, old-fashioned charm and modern conveniences. Visitors come here for the superb French cuisine and wine, cultural festivities and the abundance of outdoor sports and activities.
Napolean Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, the island's largest town. It offers an assortment of historically fascinating museums, ancient buildings and lively entertainment in the old town. About six kilometres out of town, Plage du Ricanto is a lovely beach to visit. Bastia is a cosmopolitan town with Baroque chapels, music and film festivals.
Corte is a lively university town in the centre of the island, but the real attraction for tourists are the excellent walking trails leading to the glacier lakes, natural gorges and swimming basins of the Niola region. For even more spectacular wilderness scenery, visit the Parc Naturel Regional de Corse.
Corsica also has many lovely beaches. Some of its nicest or most popular are Plage du Ricanto, Plage de Piantarella and Plage de Tamarone. The fishing village of Cap Corse and the stunning Archipel des Lavezzi are also highly recommended.
Bonifacio is an ancient fortressed town in the south, with a fascinating citadel and Upper Town (Ville Haute) offering sweeping panoramas. Filitosa is the island's famous prehistoric site and is home to mysterious ancient statues dating back to the early Neolithic era.
Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi and Figari are all serviced by modern airports. The most frequent arrivals are from Nice and Paris, with regular services from other major European cities. In the summer, ferries from Nice, Toulon and Marseille are frequent.
