France's Mediterranean coast is one of the world's most famous and glamorous. Its beautiful coastline, ancient but sophisticated towns and abundant sunshine attract the wealthy and vacationing French alike.

Nice, situated in the sweeping Baie des Anges, is the hub of the region. Its old town is a delightful mish-mash of winding streets with plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars. Nearby, you can climb Le Château (hill) for good views of the bay and town, as well as of the old port and flower market below.

Attractions also include the exotic-looking Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Cathédrale Sainte Réparate, Palais Lascaris, the belle époque Opéra House, Palais de la Méditerranée Casino and grand Hôtel Negresco. Many prefer to stroll along the Promenade des Anglais at dusk. Cemenelum, the ancient Roman city, and a 16th century monastery are found in nearby Cimiez. Nice is also famous for its world-class galleries and museums.
At the other end of the bay is Antibes, with lovely beaches that draw crowds of French families in summer. The natural beauty remains in the old town, with the ramparts along the seafront and the 16th century Château Grimaldi. Antibes' Cours Masséna (market) is also famous for its variety of Provençal produce.
Cannes attracts the rich and famous and is well known largely because of its annual film festival. The palm fringed waterfront avenue, La Croisette, gives Cannes its high-class appeal. Don't expect to find a public beach in this area, but wandering around the marinas admiring super yachts is entertaining. The old town of Le Suquet is perched on a hill offering beautiful panoramic views. Off shore are the lovely Îles de Lérins - a more down-to-earth escape.
The tiny independent Principality of Monaco is squashed around a stunning harbour, dramatically hemmed in by the sheer cliffs on which the 13th century Grimaldi Palace perches. At the other end of the bay is the famous Monte Carlo casino. It's affordable only as a day trip, but there is a very commendable Musée Océanographique.
Located in the extreme west of the coast, Saint Tropez is a nice place to visit for a few hours but ruinously expensive to stay in.

Nice is the air hub of the region with frequent flights to many European cities and other Mediterranean destinations. A good rail system runs along the coast, with all other towns reachable within an hour. Several high-speed TGV trains depart daily for Paris (5 hours).
