Situated in the southern Aegean Sea, Crete is a historically important Greek island that has plenty of room for the many tourists who flock to its gorgeous beaches every summer. It was also the centre of the ancient Minoan civilization.

Many visitors choose the well-established resort of Agios Nikolaos. It has several fine beaches and overlooks the Gulf of Mirambello. Nearby Sitia is sometimes preferred by seasoned visitors.

The village of Zakros in eastern Crete is a lively place, relatively free of tourists and includes the intriguing archaeological site of Kato Zakros. The nearby Zakros Gorge is also worth visiting for its spectacular scenery.

The west coast town of Hania is swamped with beautiful Venetian and Turkish buildings and has a pretty harbourside. Of particular interest are the massive fortifications and lighthouse, as well as the Archeological, Naval and Folklore museums in the Venetian quarter of town.

Iraklio (Heraklion) is the principal town on the island and although it's hardly a resort, it does include the ancient city walls and fortress of Rocca al Mare and outstanding Archaeological Museum. The Palace of Knossos nearby is the most magnificent, intricate and evocative of Crete's Minoan sites.

The island has a well-established tourist infrastructure with options to suit all budgets. You can choose from lively resorts or sleepy villages, and sample the excellent Greek cuisine in many restaurants. The island is has plenty of natural scenery. The Samaria Gorge, descending spectacularly to the sea, is popular for hiking, and is a must-see.

Iraklio handles the bulk of international flights, although they tend to be charter arrivals from Europe plus a smaller number of scheduled flights, via Athens. There is also an airport at Hania. Crete is one of Greek's largest islands, though most resorts are no more than an hour's taxi ride from the airports. Ferries also arrive from Athens and other Greek islands, as well as from Italy and Cyprus.
