Situated next to the amazing Rocky Mountains, and known as Colorado's 'Mile High City', Denver is a hub of culture and commerce, boasting cosmopolitan amenities with a backwoods feel.
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is one of the premier natural history museums in the country. In addition to important historical artefacts, there is an IMAX theatre and the Gates Planetarium. Nearby is the Denver Zoo.
The State Capitol is an interesting attraction on the southeastern edge of downtown. West of here, you can find the Civic Center. Also nearby, the Denver Art Museum has one of the largest Native American Indian art collections in the world, with work from tribes throughout the country on display.
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater is definitely worth a visit. The outdoor amphitheatre was carved out of a 70-million-year-old rock formation during the Great Depression. There are regular concerts and events here throughout the year.
Larimer Square and the surrounding area are where you'll find a good array of stylish shops, restaurants and bars. Alternatively, the nearby Black American Western Museum & Heritage Center is an interesting place to spend an afternoon.
A short drive from Denver, Boulder is known for the many artists' co-ops and vegan eateries around the city. Alternatively, the town of Golden is often used as a base for trips to the Denver Mountain Parks, although, the town's biggest draw is the Coors Brewery. The Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum, just west of town, is also worth a visit.
Sitting at the intersection of I-70 and I-25, Denver is easy to reach by car. Amtrak's California Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco via Denver. Trains arrive and depart from Union Station. Denver International Airport, 38.5kms northeast of downtown, is among the nation's busiest.
