Detroit - sky guide

Known as the Motor City, due to its deep-seated connection with the motor industry (namely Henry Ford’s Model T), and famous for the 1960s Motown record label, Detroit is a rejuvenated city with many quality attractions.
The Renaissance Center is now a huge landmark on the Detroit skyline. It is a series of seven glass towers, housing hotels, restaurants, shops and offices, and was built to help revitalize the downtown area. Another highlight is the Motown Museum, offering tours through the old recording studio and plenty of memorabilia and gold discs on display from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross and the Supremes.
The hub of the Detroit metropolis remains at the site on the Detroit River where the city's first white settlers landed in 1701. On the city riverfront is the Renaissance Center, along with the Civic Center, and the Henry and Edsel Ford Auditorium.
To the west of this area are Tiger Stadium, home of the Tigers major-league baseball team, and the Fort Wayne Military Museum, with information about the best-preserved pre-American Civil War fort in the Midwest.
Shopping options are diverse, and you can find great items at the Renaissance Center, in the downtown area, and in the nearby suburbs of Birmingham, Royal Oak and Troy. Much of Detroit's nightlife is centred on the downtown area and in suburban Royal Oak, home to cutting-edge restaurants and smokey coffeehouses.
A lot of attractions are well spread out, so hiring a car is a good option. The must-see Henry Ford Museum is a few kilometres outside of town on highway 12. Also of interest is the Detroit Zoo, with its many cage-less animal enclosures. For those interested in copper mining, the Keweenaw National Historical Park has a mining heritage dating back 7,000 years. Lakes Erie and Huron are also easily reached by car.
Major routes into Detroit are I-75 from the south (Toledo) and north (Flint), I-94 from the west (Chicago), and Route 401 from the east (Toronto). Regular Amtrak trains run east and west from Detroit, stopping off at Ann Arbor on the Chicago-bound line. Greyhound Lines has buses to 40 destinations throughout Michigan, linking-up with Detroit. Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the air hub for Michigan, receiving many European flights. Shuttle transfers are frequent.
