Known as the Perigord, the Dordogne region comprises four distinct individual areas, the Black Perigord, Purple Perigord, Green Perigord and White Perigord, each offering its own unique blend of stunning scenery, enthralling historical attractions and charming villages. The range and quality of the region's features makes it a very popular tourist destination.

The Black Perigord area is the most visited in the region. It boasts the magnificent town of Sarlat-la-Caneda, famed for its medieval and 17th century buildings. The town is centred on the main square, Place de la Liberte, with its numerous cafes, stores and weekend markets. Domme, a classic 13th century 'bastide', or fortified town, is the largest town in the area. Soak up the peaceful atmosphere while strolling around the fortified battlements. Several picturesque rivers run through the Black Perigord area, the most prominent being the Dordogne River, along which you will discover numerous beautiful chateaux as well as the charming hamlets of Limeuil, Roque-Gageauc, and Beynac, with its spectacular Castle of Beynac-at-Cazenac. The Black Perigord is also known for its amazing prehistoric caves.

To the south of the region lies Bergerac, the principal town of the Purple Perigord, so-called because of its numerous vineyards. The town features a magnificent statue of Cyrano de Bergerac. The golden stone villages sprinkled throughout the scenic area are mostly 13th century 'bastides', and are survivors of terrible battles fought during the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. The White Perigord is the more industrial and is centred on the regional capital of Perigueux. The town features the stunning 12th century Eglise St-Etienne and ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheatre. The nearby town of Pau is famed for its chateau, while Brantome attracts tourists with its quality restaurants and quaint 11th century abbey and belfry.

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts should head north to the virtually untouched wilderness of the Green Perigord. Nontron is the base from which to discover this largely unexplored area. Sample the splendour of the Parc Naturel Regional Perigord-Limousin and be enthralled by the walled town of Rouchechouart. Nontron itself features an acclaimed Toy and Doll Museum.

Bordeaux International Airport serves direct flights from many countries and provides frequent connections to Perigueux and other smaller airports in the region. Transportation options from the airports are regular and reliable.
