Scotland's pre-eminent city, set in an undulating landscape with fine views of the Firth of Forth, enjoys an unsurpassed location. This medieval city also has an undeniably romantic atmosphere.
Edinburgh Castle is the most distinctive and historic attraction in the city. Built on a rocky outcrop, the 1200-year old fortifications offer great views of the city and the adjacent medieval town. The Royal Mile runs from here down to the Palace of Holyrood and is lined with busking pipers and tartan shops, as well as golfing shops and souvenir vendors. Wandering the winding lanes of the old Cowsgate area beneath the castle is delightful.
Edinburgh is hilly, with several interesting natural features, most notably Arthur's Seat - a popular short climb. Many impressive buildings, including the Scottish Parliament, are also found in the centre.
If the weather turns sour, you could lose yourself in the excellent new (free) Museum of Scotland. Other good alternatives include: the National Gallery of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, while the Dynamic Earth exhibition is more modern and family oriented.
True Scottish culture is best experienced during the Edinburgh Festival (August), where you can witness the noisy mass-piper bands of the Military Tattoo. The city also draws a massive crowd for Hogmanay (New Year's Eve). If you're looking for a 'wee dram' or some haggis, head for the lively area north of Princes Street.
By car you can explore the working class port town of Leith - now a suburb of Edinburgh and home to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Lauriston Castle is also worth a day trip, while the historic towns of Stirling and St Andrews are not far away.
Edinburgh's international airport has frequent direct flights to European cities, Ireland and other parts of the UK, but there are no direct air services to/from North America. LRT buses run regularly to the centre (35 minutes). Most visitors to Edinburgh, however, arrive by train, and there are hourly trains from London (4 hours), or Glasgow (40 minutes).
