The provincial capital of Edmonton lies in the heartland of Alberta, on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. A city made rich by the oil industry - where bigger is apparently better - Edmonton boasts the world’s largest shopping mall, and Canada’s largest theatre complex.

Old Strathcona, on the south of the river, is Edmonton’s historic district. It is an area of galleries and boutiques, trendy cafés and bistros, popular with the bohemian and student crowd. Here you can also find the Alberta Legislature Building, a beautiful piece of architecture set in 23 hectares of relaxing parkland.

More tranquillity is to be discovered within the dramatic glass pyramids of Muttart Gallery, which shelter an incredible display of flower and plant life, and at Devonian Botanic, which is home to thousands of species and 44.5 hectares of nature trails. Hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing opportunities abound within the extensive park system throughout the city’s vast wooded river valley.

To the other extreme, a trip to Edmonton would not be complete without a visit to the famous West Edmonton Mall. Although it contains 800 businesses, it's more a theme park than mall, housing the world's largest indoor amusement park, including a rollercoaster, bungee-jumping platform, and enclosed wave-lake, complete with beach.

The mall has walk-through aviaries, 19 movie theatres, a lagoon with performing dolphins, a hotel, and more. Even if you’re not generally a mall-lover, this place has to be seen to be believed.

Edmonton also has a lively bar scene for those who like to stay up late. If you are not enthralled with cowboy boots and ‘honky tonk’, there are plenty of other alternatives to the plethora of country and western bars.

Edmonton straddles the inter-provincial Yellowhead Highway (16), which provides easy access from Winnipeg through Edmonton to British Columbia. Calgary is 283kms to the south on Highway 2.

Rail Canada serves Edmonton as part of its Trans-Canada train service; while Greyhound buses link Edmonton to various Canadian and American cities. Edmonton International Airport is served by carriers from all over Canada and the USA, plus several European destinations, making worldwide connections simple.
