Situated just 32kms southeast of Den Bosch and 120kms from Amsterdam, Eindhoven is an ancient city that today ranks as The Netherlands' fifth-largest metropolis due to its affiliation with the Philips electronics company (headquartered here for over a hundred years). The city boasts a lively atmosphere, a couple of good museums, and a fun water park.

Popular sights here include the many museums, with a key one being the Van Abbemuseum, a leader in modern and contemporary art. The impressive collection includes works by Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Mondriaan and Appel. Also of interest, the Philips First Incandescent Lamp Factory of 1891 shows how light bulbs were made in the 1800s. Alternatively, the Artificial Light in Art Centre boasts a fascinating collection of paintings and sculptures with artificial light as the central theme.

In a central position in the heart of the city is the Markt where, in fine weather, the terraces are always full. This is a great place to sit at a café and people-watch while eating and drinking. Genneper Parks is an area of natural beauty with many recreational possibilities situated close to the centre of Eindhoven; cycling and walking routes guide visitors past the most beautiful spots.

Stratumseind is the street with the most bars in the Netherlands. Here, there are more than 40 bars and various eating places which are also open at night. De Bergen is a part of old Eindhoven which retains most of its original feel. The pleasant bars and restaurants on the 'Kleine Berg' are popular with artistic people. A few minutes away from here by foot is the Wilhelminaplein, a charming square boasting authentic brown bars, terraces and live performances.

Eindhoven is a good base from which to explore the rest of Brabant province. Here, you'll find waterways and polders in the north and west; sand drifts, fir and deciduous woods in the south and east; and picturesque villages and ancient towns scattered all around the countryside. Just 32kms away from Eindhoven is Den Bosch (The Woods), a cathedral town dating back more than 800 years.

For those travelling by car, Eindhoven is located on the main north-south E35/E25 Amsterdam-Maastricht expressway. Trains arrive here every half-hour from Amsterdam Centraal station, as well as from Rotterdam, The Hague and Maastricht. Ten minutes' drive from the city, Eindhoven Airport is modern and efficient, with daily direct flights from cities such as Amsterdam, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Paris, Hamburg and Zürich.
