Florence portrays beauty through architecture, and has an impressive artistic legacy with works of Michelangelo, arguably the country's most dominant creative figure, on view in many locations throughout the city.
Piazza del Duomo, an architectural delight, is a great place to uncover some of Florence's historical beauty. One of the first sights you will see is the Baptistery dedicated to St John the Baptist (patron saint of Florence), with its magnificent bronze doors, and one of the oldest buildings in the city.
In front of the Baptistery is the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. Filippo Brunelleschi, a truly gifted Renaissance architect, designed the dome, and it is possible to reach the top of the cupola to see the beautiful views and appreciate the mastery of Brunelleschi. Bargello and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo dominate the city skyline. Piazza della Signoria is the hub of Florence's political life, and is surrounded by the town hall - 'Palazzo Vecchio' - and the world famous Uffizi Gallery.
You can cross the Arno River by way of the Ponte Vecchio, a famous 14th century bridge lined with jewellery shops that features on all Florentine postcards. Walk down Via Calzaiuoli, along which you will find hundreds of shops selling all manner of goods. The Florentine theatrical tradition has always been noteworthy, for example, the famous Maggio Musicale Fiorentino attracts many well-known people.
You can drive northeast to the hill village of Fiesole and to the nearest of the various Medici villas in the country. Thirty minutes to the northwest lie the neighbouring towns of Prato and Pistoia, both bursting with art and historic architecture. Westward to Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower, there are worthwhile diversions to Vinci - Leonardo's birthplace - and the hilltop town of San Miniato, which gazes down on the valleys below.

Florence has two airports. Galileo Galilei is nearer Pisa, and has services for international flights from London, Paris, Munich and major Italian cities, while Amerigo Vespucci is closer and for domestic flights. Both have regular shuttle connections to the city.
