Fort Lauderdale, known as the 'Venice of America', offers visitors picturesque canals, reliable weather and tranquil scenery. It is also situated near Florida's other principal attractions, making it an ideal holiday destination.

The most popular tourist draw-card is the Intercoastal Waterway, a combined lagoon/man-made canal running the length of America's east coast. Its marinas at Fort Lauderdale are home to a fleet of magnificent multimillion dollar pleasure yachts owned by America's rich and famous, which can be observed from the decks of replica paddle steamers that cruise the waters.

Enjoy the tranquility of the seaboard promenade, with its palms and perfect sandy beach or, alternatively, take in the luxurious mansions, luscious parks and scenic walkways along the New River. Attractions along the seaboard include the International Swimming Hall of Fame, while the downtown New River entertainment area boasts the acclaimed Museum of Art and the interactive Museum of Discovery and Science, which incorporates an IMAX theater.

Both the seaboard area and the downtown New River precinct offer a range of atmospheric bars, quality restaurants and luxurious hotels. Those wishing a more lively nightlife scene can head south to Miami, just an hour away to the south.

Nearby historical residences are Stranahan House and Bonnet House, both featuring elegant architecture and tropical gardens. For nature lovers, there is the Hugh Taylor Birch State Recreation Area, home to islets containing mangroves, a fresh water lagoon system and several species of endangered flora and fauna. Further away are the world-famous wetlands of the Everglades.

The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is serviced by more than 30 airlines and has several non-stop flights from Europe. It is small and convenient, with regular shuttles and taxi services to the city. An alternative is to use Miami International Airport, which is larger though more congested and less convenient.
