Located in the southwestern corner of Florida on the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, Fort Myers boasts a lovely beach area full of activities. The city is also famous as the home to the winter residences of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.
Fort Myers is characterised by streets lined with trees, including royal palms and tropical fruits planted by Edison.

The principal attraction is the Ford-Edison Complex, where regular tours are given; highlights are Edison’s workshop and outstanding botanical gardens. Restaurants and nightclubs, along with a hive of activity on the recently renovated downtown waterfront area, are an added bonus to the city.

The other major attraction is Fort Myers beach, where a number of water-based activities are centred; deep-sea fishing and sunset cruises are especially delightful. There are also a number of museums here. The Fort Myers Historical Museum retells the history of the area; while the Imaginarium Museum, with its fun exhibits and hurricane simulator, is great for the kids.

Apart from the fishing, other activities here include swimming, canoeing and excellent hiking; while spectator sports such as hockey, baseball and basketball are big events. Fort Myers is busy year round with the performing arts, including theatre, jazz and a symphony orchestra, as well as numerous festivals and outdoor concerts.

Sanibel and Captiva islands, near Fort Myers, offer an array of boating and driving tours; the JN ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is superb. Sarasota is just over an hour’s drive north and features the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the beautiful Jungle Gardens. Alternatively, Naples is an interesting and lively coastal town to the south of Fort Myers.

By car, use I-75 (from I-95) or US 41, to reach the city. Trains only go as far as Tampa; however, Amtrak provides a connecting service to Fort Myers. The closest airport to Fort Myers is Southwest Florida International Airport, but services are limited, so you may have to fly into Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Both of these airports have shuttle buses to Fort Myers.
