Fuerteventura, the second-largest of the Canary Islands, is known throughout Europe for its gorgeous sandy beaches. The coastline of this island is vast, and visitors can choose from a number of beaches around the island.
Particularly popular beach areas are: Jandia in the south and Corralejo in the north. At Jandia, you will find flat beaches which stretch far into the distance and are perfect for long walks. Corralejo’s coastal landscape is different; it is made up of golden sand dunes, and is the starting point for a number of hikes across the island.
Betancuria, the island’s old capital, will certainly appeal to history buffs. It is home to the ancient Church of Santa Maria, which was initially built in 1410, but was rebuilt in the 1600s after it was destroyed by pirates. Also in Betancuria is a local museum featuring archaeological, ethnographical and paleontological displays.
Fuerteventura is a wonderful place for leisure activities, with most of them centred on the coastline. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, water sports are also extremely popular, including: surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling. Hiking over the island’s volcanic landscape is an additional leisure option.
Having access to your own transport makes exploring the island much easier, and many of the little towns and beaches scattered across its expanse are worth visiting. La Oliva is a charming town with many bars and restaurants that become very lively in the evenings.
Tefia, to the north of La Oliva, has a fascinating museum, La Alcogida, which focuses on the lifestyle in an old Canarian village. Corralejo is a picturesque place, with dunes in the town centre and a nature reserve in the outlying areas. It is also possible to take a ferry to Los Lobos, an island just off the coast of Fuerteventura.
The only ways of reaching Fuerteventura are by sea or by air. Ferries run from Cadiz in mainland Spain to the island. Fuerteventura International Airport receives flights from all major European cities.
