Situated in the west of Ireland, the country’s fourth-largest city, Galway, is a must-see for anyone travelling in this part of the country. The city boasts pleasant, winding streets, stunning architecture and great festivals. The countryside surrounding Galway is also noteworthy.

This medieval town is home to an abundance of splendid sites. Some of these include the Spanish Arch, which is all that remains of the city’s walls, and the 14th century Lynch’s Castle. When you see a unique pyramid-shaped spire, you’ll be looking at the fabulous 14th century Collegiate Church of St Nicholas of Myra.
On a walking tour of the town, you should head over to Eyre Square, where there’s a picturesque park which hosts the Arts Festival in July. The seaside area of SS, to the north of town centre, is popular with tourists.

A frenetic nightlife can be enjoyed in Galway, and some of the pubs have a genuine old Irish charm. There are also a handful of restaurants serving excellent quality seafood, as well as the local drink - Guinness.

Burren lies a short drive south of Galway, in county Clare. Here you’ll find flat limestone rock that covers the ground for miles. It’s also home to rare species of flora and fauna, megalithic tombs and stone forts.

Driving to Galway is probably the easiest way of getting there, although don’t expect six-lane motorways. The drive from Dublin takes over four hours on the N6/N4, with Limerick city a two-hour drive to the south on the N18.

The nearest international airport to Galway is Shannon International Airport, about a two-hour drive south. Ryanair offers cheap flights here from London and a few other European cities. There are also regular flights from the US to Shannon. Dublin International Airport is another option, with more flights from Europe and the UK.
